Latest Windows 10 Update: What You Need to Know

Background

To ensure protection against potential threats, all software requires regular security updates, commonly referred to as "patches." When a piece of software stops receiving these crucial updates, it enters an "unsupported" state, rendering it vulnerable to security risks.

As software ages, manufacturers eventually halt the production and distribution of patches and security updates. At this stage, the software is considered "legacy" or "end of life," meaning it is no longer supported and consequently poses security risks if used.

Software vulnerabilities can become widely known among hackers who create programs and services to exploit them effortlessly, even by individuals with limited technical skills.

When does the update come into effect?

Microsoft offers four editions of Windows 10: Home, Professional, Enterprise, and Education.

Starting from June 2023, Microsoft has announced that security updates will only be provided to Windows 10 machines running the latest version of the OS, known as 22H2, for Home and Professional editions. This may result in certain machines being unsupported. This will also mean that organisations with Cyber Essentials certifications, will no longer meet the requirements.

Furthermore, Microsoft has published dates for the Enterprise and Education editions in 2024, indicating that only the latest version, 22H2, will receive security updates.

Microsoft has officially declared that support for Windows 10 will come to an end on October 14, 2025. Subsequently, only Windows 11 will receive ongoing security updates.

How can I determine the version of Windows 10 installed on my machine?

In many cases, Windows 10 installations are set to update automatically.

To check the version of Windows 10 running on your machine, simply type 'updates' into the search bar and select "OS Build and System info" on the right. The version details will be listed there.

If your version is 21H2, it is important to note that updates will cease starting from June 13, 2023. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to update to version 22H2 (or Windows 11) promptly.

If your version is already 22H2, you will continue to receive updates until October 14, 2025.

Staying updated and ensuring the security of your operating system is crucial in today's digital landscape. Microsoft has announced the end of support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, with only Windows 11 receiving ongoing security updates thereafter.

It is important to verify the version of Windows 10 installed on your machine to determine the necessary actions. If you are running version 21H2, it is advised to update to version 22H2 or consider transitioning to Windows 11 as soon as possible to continue receiving essential updates. By prioritising these updates, you can help maintain a secure and protected computing environment.
