As we continue to scale, we are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Software Engineering Lead to drive the technical direction of our backend infrastructure. This is a strategic role, focused on designing and optimising our backend systems, services, and architecture as we transition towards a microservices-based ecosystem.
You will work closely with our Cloud Security Engineer and Head of Product to align development priorities with business goals, ensuring efficient delivery and long-term growth. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a team of developers in building a scalable, secure, and high-performing platform in the cyber security space.
The Role
As a Software Engineering Lead, you will play a crucial role in defining and implementing the technical strategy of our backend services. You will lead the transition to a microservices architecture, make key decisions on backend technologies, and oversee development best practices. You will also mentor and guide the development team (currently five developers), ensuring high standards of code quality, security, and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and lead the evolution of our backend infrastructure towards a microservices-based architecture.
- Evaluate and implement backend technologies, frameworks, and services to improve scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Design and manage SQL database structures to ensure efficiency, integrity, and scalability.
- Collaborate with the Cloud Security Engineer to embed security best practices into the development lifecycle.
- Work closely with the Head of Product to prioritise technical initiatives that align with business goals and growth strategies.
- Mentor and guide the development team, improving their technical expertise and ensuring best practices.
- Develop and deploy high-quality, maintainable, and scalable backend code.
- Optimise the backend for performance, security, and reliability.
- Oversee integrations with third-party cyber security tools and services.

What We’re Looking For
Must-Have Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of backend development experience, with expertise in Python and relevant backend frameworks.
- Strong understanding of microservices architecture and best practices.
- Experience leading technical strategy and decision-making in a development team.
- Hands-on experience with:
- Hasura (GraphQL engine)
- Digital Ocean (cloud infrastructure)
- Strong knowledge of SQL database design, optimisation, and management.
- Strong knowledge of security best practices for web applications.
- Experience in mentoring and guiding development teams.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience working in cyber security or developing IT security applications.
- Prior experience leading backend development in a fast-growing startup.
- Familiarity with DevSecOps principles and compliance frameworks.
- Understanding of js (or other relevant React-based framework).
- Hands-on experience with:
- Zitadel (identity management)
- Strapi (CMS)
