CybaVerse Success Stories – Emma Mouncey

At CybaVerse, we believe every team member has a unique and different story to share. Our next Success Story spotlights Emma Mouncey, our talented Cyber Security Analyst, whose professional journey and passion for cyber security have made a significant impact on our team.

Could you tell us about your professional journey and experiences that led you to join CybaVerse? What drew you to working with us?

Before beginning my career at CybaVerse, I completed a BSc (Hons) in Criminology and Cybercrime. This degree ignited my passion for combating cybercrime, particularly by empowering SMEs with the knowledge and tools to strengthen their cyber security defences. During the third year of my degree, I undertook a 10-week internship at Cybaverse, working one day a week. This hands-on experience provided invaluable industry insight, complementing my academic studies. At the end of the internship, I was offered a position to continue with the team after my graduation. Having thoroughly enjoyed my time with CybaVerse, I eagerly accepted the offer, knowing it was the perfect environment for me to grow and further develop my skills post-degree.

How would you say that your educational and professional experiences prior to CybaVerse have contributed to your success in your current role with us?

My educational background not only sparked and nurtured my interest in this field, but also helped me develop a range of transferable life skills. These skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication, have been essential in both my professional growth and in navigating the complexities of cyber security. The combination of academic knowledge and practical experience has equipped me with a well-rounded perspective, allowing me to contribute effectively to my current role at CybaVerse.

What unique skills, experiences, or perspectives do you bring to your role at CybaVerse?

I bring a blend of academic insight and practical experience to my role at CybaVerse, offering a unique perspective on cyber security that focuses on both prevention and effective problem-solving. My experience working with SMEs during my second-year module placement has given me valuable perspective on the specific challenges faced by smaller organisations within cyber security. Additionally, my analytical skills and ability to communicate complex ideas in a straightforward manner help foster collaboration between CybaVerse and clients.

Can you highlight some of the work or projects you've been involved in since joining Cybaverse?

At CybaVerse, I’ve been actively involved in the ongoing ISO27001 assessments, which are critical to maintaining our security standards. This has included organising and reviewing internal policies to ensure they meet the latest compliance requirements. Following on from this, CybaVerse have officially recertified in the ISO27001 certification for another year, which we are thrilled about. Additionally, I’ve worked on improving access to our information security training, ensuring team members can assess information on best practices.

In your opinion, what sets CybaVerse apart as a workplace? How does the company promote a positive and inclusive culture?

CybaVerse encourages employees to pursue courses, explore new skills, and even gain experience across different departments, which fosters a sense of continuous learning. When I left university, I wasn’t entirely sure of the specific direction I wanted my career to take, but I knew I had a passion for cyber security. CybaVerse has provided me with a supportive environment to expand my knowledge, gain hands-on experience, and refine my career path. This focus on personal development, along with a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere, truly makes CybaVerse a standout workplace.

Have you completed or do you plan to pursue any training or development to enhance your role at CybaVerse?

Yes, I plan to undertake training centred around the ISO 27001 certification, as well as enhance my technical skills by completing the CompTIA Security+ certification. These courses will not only deepen my knowledge in critical areas but also enable me to provide even better support to our clients. By broadening my expertise in both cyber security standards and technical practices, I aim to contribute more effectively to CybaVerse’s mission and further improve the quality of service we offer.

How do you typically like to spend your time away from work? Do you have any specific passions or interests?

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active by going to the gym, which helps me maintain both physical and mental well-being. I also love spending quality time with my family and our dogs, whether it's completing an activity or simply relaxing. These activities provide a great balance to my work life.

If you could offer one piece of advice to a new employee starting at CybaVerse, what would it be?

My advice would be to be your authentic self and don’t hesitate to be bold. CybaVerse thrives on mutual respect, and every voice is valued here. If you encounter challenges, don’t be afraid to speak up and contribute to finding solutions. This is a workplace where taking initiative and sharing ideas is encouraged, so embrace the opportunity to grow and make an impact.
